Federal Budget 2022-2023 : FAME Puzzled

April 7, 2022

MONTRÉAL, APRIL 7, 2022 — Festivals and Major Events Canada (FAME) is puzzled by the 2022-2023 federal budget.

While the Coalition welcomes the addition of $50 million to compensate Canadian arts, culture and heritage organizations for revenue losses related to public health restrictions and capacity limitations, it is surprised that the amount is not larger and is divided between Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts and Telefilm Canada. Under the circumstances, given the anticipated number of potential beneficiaries, one cannot expect significant increases.

Curiously, with respect to Canadian Heritage and festivals in particular, the 2022-23 budget includes more reminders of measures announced in the 2021-22 budget than adjustments or enhancements.

For FAME, this is a missed opportunity to extend and enhance the Major Festivals and Events Support Initiative, for example, or to make permanent funds that are added year by year.
